Caraway is a hardy umbellifer native to Asia, Northern Africa, and Central Europe and is a biennial in the Apiaceae family.  The Romans used it with fish, vegetables and as a flavoring for soups, bean and cabbage dishes. 
 
Caraway has a pungent aroma that, like the flavor, is warm and bittersweet, sharply spicy, with a note of dried orange peel and a slight but lingering hint of anise.
 
Caraway might aid in digestive problems including heartburn, bloating and gas and may also assist in weight loss. Chewing caraway seeds is a refreshing palate cleanser.
